Purchase options and add-ons

Covering a thousand years of history, this richly illustrated volume tells the story of the creation of Western civilization in Europe and the Mediterranean. Written by noted scholars and based on the latest research, it offers the most authoritative account of life in medieval Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the coming of the Renaissance.
Exploring a period of profound diversity and change, the contributors focus on all aspects of medieval history from the empires and kingdoms of Charlemagne and the Byzantines to the new nations which fought the Hundred Years War; from the expression of religion in the great monasteries and cathedrals to the mixed ambitions of the Crusades; and from the cultural worlds of chivalric knights, popular festivals, and new art forms to the social catastrophe of the Black Death. Divided between the Mediterranean world and northern Europe, the six chapters in this book demonstrate the movement of the center of gravity in European life from the Mediterranean to the north. With over two hundred illustrations, including dozens in color, the volume also contains comprehensive reference material in maps, genealogies, a chronology, lists of further reading, and a full index.

Great book on Medieval history with excellent illustrations
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013
This book was listed as an optional reading for a class, but I didn't want to buy it from the school bookstore (OUCH, my pocketbook!). Cannot complain with the low price, the high quality of the book (very minimal wear and tear), and how fast I got it.

For some reason our popular culture is enamored of the term "dark ages" coined in 1330 by Petrarch, the Italian poet, to describe the early Middle Ages. He originally compared these times to the light of Rome, ignoring all the barbarity, cruelty and vice of the Roman era. If the Oxford history was one's only historical resource one could wonder about renaming them the "Dull Ages". Still they were by no means dark even though the writers insist on liberally sprinkling that term into their tome.

Actually the Middle Ages were full of light, life, music, architecture, poetry and literature, most of which were missed by this book. It might have been a more enjoyable if the writers had understood that Rome was indeed fallen, so they didn't need to tell all the political history of the Holy Roman Empire which superseded it.

Still one has to start somewhere when learning history. This book, despite its flaws is readable and short (only 398 pages, counting index). I was disappointed at the lack of anything approaching reasonably complete discussion of the insular Celtic and Nordic worlds of the times, particularly the rich artistic and literary traditions of the north. Since this is the Oxford history I'd expected this stereotypically English neglect so wasn't startled by it. Neither was I surprised to see fragments of fossilized remnants of opinion left over from that Oxford don, Edward Gibbon.

There was a lack of full discussion of implications of the Islamic invasions and there was dry and lifeless discussion of the Frankish and Teutonic worlds, other Medieval politics, but for the most part the political parts of the history were as comprehensive as you can get in 400 pages in our postmodern academic climate.

I would recommend that the reader who is not forced to read this book by an unenlightened professor or who doesn't need it to fight insomnia should instead read Robert Fossier's "The Cambridge Illustrated History of The Middle Ages" or Barry Cunliffe's charming text, "Europe Between the Oceans 9000 BC to 1000 AD". Both are much more pleasant reads and the writers have a better sense of drama. (This is surprising since Cunliffe also edited Oxford histories.)

Revised to give more opinion.

Very interesting

You do not need to be a scholar to enjoy this book; you just need some familiarity with the Middle Ages before beginning it. In my case, I took the three courses on Middle Ages history that were offered by the Great Courses series; that was really all the preparation I needed. But for someone with very little knowledge of the Middle Ages, this is definitely not the place to start. This is not an introduction to the Middle Ages -- although it appears to be marketed as such. The book is divided up into a small number of historical essays, each on a particular time-period and general location in Europe. Each essay is written by a university professor specializing in medieval history. The essays are elegantly written, polished, with lots of interesting illustrations and a generously large typeface. But what the book gives is mainly a capsule overview. This is a vast subject, covering more than a thousand years and all of Europe. One could easily write a book of this size covering only say the Byzantine empire during the high middle ages. Many events are just mentioned only briefly. For example there is hardly any mention at all of the Spanish Inquisition, or the Merovingians. Not one mention of Charles Martel! There is little to alert the unknowing reader that upon the death of Charlemagne's son Louis the Pious his three heirs, Charles the Bald, Louis the German, and Lothair, more or less divided the empire between themselves, Charles taking West Francia, Lothair Middle Francia, and Louis East Francia -- and that this event more or less set the stage for the rest of European history. In fact, it is surprising how very little is devoted to Charlemagne. But again, one could write an entire book of this size about Charlemagne, and still not do him justice. So this book is a digest version of Medieval European history, and it is definitely not intended for readers coming to the subject for the first time. However, the book appears to be marketed to include readers who have no prior knowledge of the subject. This is misleading, and therefore I deduct one star. Overall, however, this is an extremely well-written historical capsule view of the middle ages for those with prior knowledge of the subject. It will definitely whet your appetite for more detailed analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars 写真満載のヨーロッパ中世史
Reviewed in Japan on February 24, 2010
