Top review from the United States

I've read them all, - Giles, Smith, Doolittle, ... This is the very best. It is erudite yet eminently readable. Johnston approached China with insight and affection. He approached it on its own terms, neither through the eyes of a 19th century missionary nor through Occidental-only eyes of western administrators, as was true of so many of the Chinese commentators of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work as magistrate in Weihaiwei brought him in contact with real people in the very basics of their lives. Johnston gives us the best of all possible worlds - on the one hand, he provides chapter after chapter of the most concrete detail of the foundations of Chinese peasant existence and on the other, he provides learned explanations of Chinese beliefs and cultural systems that are informed by his own encyclopedic learning. His footnoting is superb. Those familiar with the works of Giles, Smith and Doolittle will be even more delighted by this work. Whatever price is paid for this work, it cannot be too high a price to pay.
