Purchase options and add-ons

From the time of early settlement in Virginia, water-powered mills played a primary role in the state's economy. This work provides an overview of grain milling in Floyd County, Virginia, from 1770 to the present day. Topics covered include the difficulties involved in identifying early mills, the importance of mill site selection, water wheel types, laws regulating mills, the decline of milling and physical remains of abandoned mill sites.

The main body of the book provides individual histories of 140 grist, flour, and feed mills, a few of which also processed wool. The histories are based primarily on oral histories, title deed records, and local newspapers. More than 100 photographs and maps supplement the text, and tables provide production figures for various mills from industrial censuses of 1850, 1870, and 1880.

This book would mostly appeal to readers in southwest Virginia, although others in the U.S. who study and research the mostly long-gone mills would find it fascinating. It was researched and written by Franklin F. Webb, now deceased, and Ricky L. Cox, whose other occupation is an instructor of English and Appalachian studies at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. It only takes reading a few pages to realize the time and research put into this book. They wrote the history of 140 grist, flour, and feed mills from 1770 to present day. The authors traveled along every creek and stream in Floyd County to find remnants of the mills. They talked to local residents and were shown many old photographs of the mills which were included in the book. Often the photographs also contained people and most are identified. Since my interest since retiring has been genealogy, it has been a pleasant surprise to see pictures of long-gone people I've always heard of or am kin to, but never met. The different types of mills are described in detail. The authors also must have spent a total of what would amount to several years at the Floyd County Courthouse going through all the Deed Books. After the description of each mill, there is listed all the deeds they could find pertaining to that particular piece of land. Anyone who has researched through these books knows the difficulty of reading faded ink along with handwriting hard to decipher. I am proud to own a copy of this book and can recommend it with no hesitation.

This book covers all aspects of mill history: the families, property transfers and the operation of each mill. The explanation of technology, the progression of mill technology and how this affected the workings and production of each mill was interesting and explained in a clear manner for those of us who are unfamiliar with how water mills operated. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in water mills, Floyd County Virginia or anyone interested in Appalachian Mountain history and culture.
