Learn the art of Japanese gardening with this classic, fascinating text.

The
Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly one thousand years ago. It is the oldest existing text on Japanese gardening—or any kind of gardening—in the world. In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide an English-language translation of this classic work and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. Central to this explanation is an understanding of the sacred importance of stones in Japanese culture and Japanese garden design.

Written by a Japanese court noble during the Heian period (794-1184), the
Sakuteiki includes both technical advice on gardening—much of which is still followed in today's Japanese gardens—and an examination of the four central threads of allegorical meaning, which were integral features of Heian-era garden design. For those seeking inspiration to build a rock garden or just better understand the Japanese stone garden, the Sakuteiki is an enduring classic.

For individuals interested in garden and landscape history, this book is an important read. There are many recent books about Japanese garden design, but start with this book's translation first. It will provide a framework for understanding more contemporary writings. It is interesting to learn what Japanese garden designers were focused upon, especially good health and being fortunate, discouraging bad luck. Too many contemporary books focus upon the artifacts of the gardens, as though a collection of Japanese-like things will make a Japanese garden. And while this book is also at times focused upon objects in the garden, it also establishes a philosophical and theoretical setting for the goals of the overall design, something often overlooked in contemporary writings. It is important too, that the reader learn and understand the relationship and inter-play between architecture and landscape, becoming one. This book is truly for individuals who like to read, re-read and study. I glean so much more every time I examine passages and study the footnotes. It is a high quality intellectual effort. In this age of visual communication (pictures), it would be helpful if a revised edition someday contained extensive images to illustrated the ideas conveyed in the text, but at the same time, I greatly appreciate the text and find it refreshing to examine an effort that contains primarily words and not flashy pictures-- but a new edition will only be accomplished when someone as accomplished as Jiro Takei decides to extend the work. While visiting the great gardens of Kyoto, this is an excellent accompaniment to read in the evening hours and then the next day, apply what one has read to what one is observing. When visiting the gardens, it is helpful to have read widely concerning Animism, Shinto, Zen Buddhism, and the general history of Japan, plus the history of Chinese garden design (Maggie Keswick and Peter Valder). It will open your eyes to interpret more of what is experienced.

This is THE BOOK to get for the Japanophile in your family. Not only does the book have the actual translation of this 900 year old classic work about gardening, but it is also a look into the aesthetic philosophy of garden beauty. The authors' commentary goes into nature, geomancy and taboos and other matters about the classic work. The book has index, glossary and ample footnotes. A quote to make you chuckle states, "When a stone from the mountains or riverbeds is set in the manner of deities, it will become a 'demon stone', there are many cases throughout the country of trouble stemming from doing this". I will treasure this book forever.

My husband got this for ideas on the Japanese garden we're working on. Not only did he get new ideas he discovered several things he was doing wrong. The book will pay for itself by keeping several plants from needing to be replaced because he was planting them wrong.

Could be a larger size book. Letters too small. This is a book to study, so it should save the eyes from aditional effort.
