In the early morning of September 8, 1755, a force of French Regulars, Canadians and Indians crouched unseen in a ravine south of Lake George.

Under the command of French general Jean-Armand, Baron de Dieskau, the men ambushed the approaching British forces, sparking a bloody conflict for control of the lake and its access to New York's interior. Against all odds, British commander William Johnson rallied his men through the barrage of enemy fire to send the French retreating north to Ticonderoga. The stage was set for one of the most contested regions throughout the rest of the conflict. Historian William Griffith recounts the thrilling history behind the first major British battlefield victory of the French and Indian War.

William Griffith is a native of Branchburg, New Jersey and currently resides in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He received his BA in History from Shepherd University in 2014, and MA in Military History from Norwich University in 2018. His passion for history can be traced back to his first trip with his father to Fort William Henry along the southern shore of Lake George when he was five-years-old. William has been published in Garden State Legacy magazine and has written for the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Association periodical, Emerging Civil War, The Journal of Civil War Medicine, and the American Battlefield Trust. He has previously served as a historical interpreter at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, Maryland and with Prince William County, Virginia's Office of Historic Preservation. He currently serves as a Program Associate with the Gettysburg Foundation's Leadership Program and is a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide. When not indulging himself in military history, he can be found closely following his second passion: the New York Yankees.

William’s first book, The Battle of Lake George: England’s First Triumph in the French and Indian War, was released by The History Press on September 5, 2016. He is the author of A Handsome Flogging: The Battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778, which was released as part of Savas Beatie’s Emerging Revolutionary War Series in July 2020.

Thoroughly researched and well written, Griffith successfully argues that Lake George was a tremendous victory for England and the colonies where they most needed it,

I received this book as a Christmas gift and am greatly enjoying the read. I read Anderson's book (The War that Made America) last year, which I strongly recommend, but having grown up near Lake George I really wanted to know more about that battle also. William does a great job with the background story leading up to Lake George and it complements Anderson's book well. My only issue is that I'm a visual person and would have greatly preferred there to have been a series of maps showing the many battle locations he describes, and perhaps a few less images of the military men (if page count is a constraint). I find myself going back and forth to Google Maps. Otherwise, an excellent book that I'm very glad I'm reading!

I have visited the Battle of Lake George Battlefield several times. In William Griffith's "The Battle of Lake George" we are finally given a comprehensive account of the battle and its historic significance in the war for North America. I finally learned that Bloody Pond and the morning scout were actually part of the Battle of Lake George. The battlefield is not that easy to find unless you are looking for it. There are no major signs and I'm sure hundreds of thousands of people drive by each year never knowing that the battlefield is just off the main highway. Griffith demonstrates how the battle was England's first major victory in the French and Indian War and that it secured a foothold at the southern end of Lake George and the eventual construction of Fort William Henry (which in contrast is easily seen from the highway and a major tourist stop). I think it is one of the best books written about the French and Indian War.

It is well written by such a young author. He gave me a full understanding of the events leading up to and including the battle. It is a better description than any history class I have sat through.
