—B. N. Wolfe, in Bryn Mawr Classical Review, 2009.01.22
From the Back Cover
Studies in Etymology, 2nd edition is equally devoted to Greek and Latin language roots and includes historical information so users can trace, and thus better grasp, the organic growth of the English language. Vocabulary charts and extensive exercises aid memorization and learning comprehension. The second edition has been coauthored by Rita M. Fleischer of The Graduate School and University Center of The City University of New York.
Charles W. Dunmore was on the Classics faculty at New York University for many years, serving for some time as the chairman of that department. He was consulting editor on Latin and Greek etymology for the World Book Encyclopedia, and is the author of "Selections from Ovid" and co-author, with Rita M. Fleischer, of "Studies in Etymology," both available from Focus Publishing.
Rita M. Fleischer is the Administrative Director for Foreign Languages at the CUNY Graduate Center. She did her graduate and undergraduate work at New York University. She has taught at public and private schools in the metropolitan area, co-authored several texts, and taught at the intensive Latin/Greek Institute of Brooklyn College and the City University Graduate Center.

The Introduction gives a summary of the history of the English language from the first millennium B.C. to modern times and briefly discusses how a variety of different languages influenced and affected the development of English. The author notes that Latin and Greek have had a more significant impact on the development of the English language than other languages.
Lessons 1 through 7 deal with the various ways that Latin has influenced and affected the English language. Lessons 8 through 14 deal with the various ways that Greek has influenced and affected the English language. Each Lesson includes explanatory text, and exercises for students. The text and exercises are appropriate for students at the college or university level. Some of the material could be used for teaching advanced high school students.
The book is an academic textbook, and is not suitable for a reader interested in a casual or general introduction to the history of the English language, or the role that Latin and Greek have played in the development of the English language. Some teachers or instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL) or English for Academic Purposes (EAP) might find portions of the textbook useful to generate ideas for preparing classroom materials for building vocabulary, illustrating the role of prefixes and suffixes in English, and explaining the Latin and Greek origins of many technical words in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Readers interested in the subject covered by this textbook should consider also taking a look at the following books: Donald M. Ayers, Bioscientific Terminology [BIOSCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY WORD] [Paperback ]; Donald M. Ayers, English Words from Latin and Greek Elements 2nd (second) edition Text Only ; and Oscar E. Nybakken, Greek and Latin in Scientific Terminology .
