So I think it's fair to say it's a winner in our house.
This short and simple little book is super cute, imaginative, heartwarming, and even sneakily educational. It's great for my young reader, who even literally just this morning was using the book to build confidence in literacy skills. While the language is simple, it's not simplistic, and doesn't talk down to kids. Rather, it seems to enter a young, imaginative world and bring us along for the ride.
Another thing that's great is that it's not your typical "little kid going to school for the first time" book. There are some fun twists and turns, and without giving too much away, I'll just say that it really underscores the power of imagination and new friendships in easing transitions, as well as just being/embracing your fully weird and wonderful self.
If I had to nitpick, I'd say that the binding, while it appears to be strong and I have no worries about longevity, visually has some issues in that it looks like the areas of the page near the spine meant to be cropped were not, so there are print marks right along the spine that are sometimes visible if you have the book pressed fully open. It would be nice if the color of the page ran fully into the binding. But this is a really minor issue. It doesn't really take away from the experience my child and I had of reading the book, and for the first run from a brand new press, I'll cut them some slack for very minor imperfections when the overall print quality is good. Go ahead and buy the book, folks!
Finally, if you and your kids like the podcast Little Stories for Tiny People, you will love the book as a further adventure for Little Hedgehog. And even if you aren't familiar with the podcast, it's still a wonderful book. I hope Little Hedgehog gets many more adventures in print! And in our house we'd LOVE to see a Lambden and the Sleep Train book!
If you have not yet heard the Little Hedgehog stories on podcast you are missing some of the most clever and funny moments to enjoy with your kid.
Honestly, I give thanks for every RP story my daughter and I enjoy!
As for her opinion "Best Stories Ever".

Beyond bedtimes, this is a great book for back to school time especially for young children. There's fun themes about kids' expectations for school, but to me the most important message is about making friends. The core story is about a child finding a friend who shares and appreciates her quirky and big imagination, and it was a great touchstone for us to help our own child navigate the difficult waters of finding friends who like you because of who you are - even if that's different from everyone else.
The illustrations bring the characters to life, I love the expressions on Little Hedgehog's face!
