This is a wonderful book which describes the way Ancient Greeks planned and built their cities, fortresses, harbours, etc. It explains the cultural roots of Greek architecture and the importance of the public buildings, especially the agora. The drawings and plans (there are plenty of them) are excellent and the bibliography is a good guide if you want to know more about the subject.

Although this book was published in 1949, it is still very valuable, particularly for the large number of plans.

Most books on Greek architecture concentrate on the temples, but this concentrates on the agora, the market place, which was the real centre of Greek towns. Temples are confined to a chapter on Shrines and religious buildings, while there are also chapters on Gymnasia, Houses and Fountains. It concentrates on towns in mainland Greece and also in Ionia, modern Turkey but does not cover the colonies in Sicily and the West. But the discussion of the agora is of great value, especially the description of the stoa, that peculiar form of Greek architecture , a long colonnade where market traders and philosophers could congregate.

It was published in 1949, summarising much of the work done in the 1930s when large scale excavations – Olynthus, Miletos and Priene were still in fashion. Many copies are still available second hand for around £10 and are well worth picking up and adding to your library.
