By the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell's Shogun is soon to be a major FX/Hulu TV series!

Shogun, the classic epic novel of feudal Japan that captured the heart of a culture and the imagination of the world, is now available for the first time in serial format. Part One contains the first half of the complete novel.

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen--Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne's loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed.

Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shogun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shogun is, as the New York Times put it, ‘'not only something you read--you live it.'‘

James Clavell, the son of a Royal Navy family, was educated in Portsmouth before, as a young artillery officer, he was captured by the Japanese at the Fall of Singapore. It was on this experience that his bestselling novel KING RAT was based. He maintained this oriental interest in his other great works: TAI-PAN, SHOGUN, NOBLE HOUSE and GAI JIN. Clavell lived for many years in Vancouver and Los Angeles, before settling in Switzerland, where he died in 1994.

UPDATE:I contacted the publisher directly and their customer service was excellent. I haven’t finished the book yet, but if you enjoy the TV series, I recommend reading this book. There is a lot of backstory and character development that you will miss out on if you only watch the show. It is well written and humorous at times.Old review:I am glad I looked ahead in this book, because I have at least one upside down page, where the text is also cut off. Such a shame

I read Shogun many years but decided to reread following the recent tv series. While the tv series was very well done, reading the book again reminded me of what a great writer James Clavell was. I can’t imagine how much research went into writing the book. Even if you saw the tv series, I would still recommend reading the book as the detail and background provided gives an excellent view of the culture and practices in feudal Japan.

I read this book many years ago, when it was first published. Reading it again, I remembered how much I enjoyed it. I am fully enjoying it again. Great book. I am on to book two.

So I started watching the first episode of Shōgun on hulu and was immediately sucked into this world. I went to see if there were any books like the show and lo and behold the show was adapted from a book series! This book is dark and gritty and really makes you wonder how life would have been back in feudal Japan. The whole book is filled with espionage and deceit. Excited for the next book.

I recently began reading the book and am already hooked. The writing is very immersive, with one small wrinkle. The author refers to a famous sword, the "Murasama blade" which throws me off every time I read it. I believe he means to reference MuraMASA, not Murasama. As a Japanese martial history and craftsmanship enthusiast, this small mistake catches my attention and is hard to overlook. Otherwise, the boom is fabulous so far and I look forward to reading the second.

A very well-written and detailed book. Everything from the descriptions to the conversations and the backgrounds were written so brilliantly, it was a very easy and quick read for a 500+ page book. Can’t wait to read Part 2!

I have always liked the book Shotgun by James Clavell. This is a slightly different take on the classic book and is based on the current mini series on Hulu. You don't need to watch the mini series to enjoy the books

Couldn't stop reading. Every part of this book so vivid. Really enjoyed learning about the ways of Japanese people back in time and also about those they call Barbarians. So interesting.
