This is one of 60 scrolls from a transcription of the "Avatamsaka Sutra." Ruled lines in gold pigment segment the paper, which is decorated with flakes of god. At some point, the top and bottom of this scroll were burnt in a fire with the damage resulting in a strange visual effect when viewing the scroll today. The red seal of Senpukuji Temple is Kawachi province (now Osaka prefecture) is found at the beginning, as this is where the scroll was passed down through the ages. This sutra is made of decorated paper with ink, and it dates from 12th-century CE Japan. (Tokyo National Museum)
